Can power steering be fitted to 120 series ? Possible - practical ? 120-130

Have a hankering in the future to own a 120 series, but need power steering due to a medical condition. Would look to securing the necessary bits before purchasing a vehicle, just in case !!
Will still keep 244 ( just in case ! )
cheers

Yo

If I were doing it, I would be inclined to go with a power rack and pinion from a Mustang II. I think that is one of John Parkers projects currently on the back burner. Eliminates a number of existing steering system parts as well as replacing the old timey worm and sector steering box. Power racks are available although probably not required for most. they have a relatively compact pump that could be finagled to fit a modified AC compressor mount.

Just eyeballing it, the biggest issue is installing rack mounts in the existing crossmember and keeping the geometry correct. Luckily the front crossmember is relatively easy to remove.

Location of tie rod pivot points is importand to prevent bump steer. Check out some suspension publications by Steve Smith Motorsports or HP Books.

Probably would require a U joint in the steering shaft and a steering shaft bearing in the firewall. Not sure about interference with the left motormount. The steering shaft coming out of the rack angles upward and outward 20 degrees in each direction or so.

Tschuss!

Mike

Unless you have a special reason for needing it, i.e., you or some other family member won't be able to drive the car without it, installing power streering is probably not worth the cost and effort. Even with wider wheels and tires, steering on these cars is not particularly heavy and, remember, the steering was configured for normal muscle power.

Sorry. Pls.disregard my blather. I should have read your post more carefully before jumping in. Yes it can be done, but you know that already from Joaquin's reply and the link he gave you.

A lot of work.
Randy Masi make it on his 1800 (very similar to the 122) on 1998.
See history and photos on Glenn Goodspeed's web site: http://home.earthlink.net/~goodspeeds/PSTERING.HTM

Happy volving

Thanks, I read the link in the previous post on fitting to the 1800 by Randy Masi. If the 122s is the same configuration as the 1800 it's not too much work.
An engineer friend who would probably perform the work, provided I sourced the parts.
Old 164 models as a donor are thin on the ground here, but they're out there.140 series with power steering are rare here.
Let a 122s go three years ago, believing power steering couldn't be done.
Now I know there's a way !!
cheers
