Is used 940 a good buy? 900

I am thinking of buying a used 940 . I dont know if the car would meet my requirements. What I want is a car that is not too complicated especially electrically and would be easy to maintain . A car you can rely on but would be easy on your pocket. Would a 940 meet my stingy conditions?

They are a solid car - a bit dated seeing what's out there today, but basically "Volvo-reliable" and tough. Like any car, their past treatment will determine future problems - or the lack thereof. Get maintenance records and ensure that oil changes have been done on schedule, the car has had the occasional tune-up, timing belts...all the signs that it had a reasonably diligent owner. Given that, you should have a good experience with the car.

We've had ours for 2 yrs and 27k mi, so it's now showing 160k...no problems except for a failed EGR valve ($300 parts and labor). Compared to new car payments, that $4k purchase looks like a real deal.

Own 2 1995 940s, a sedan and a wagon. Bought both with about 93k miles, now wagon is 130k, sedan 145k, both run strong. change oil & filter every 3k to 4k miles. Get 23 mpg wagon, sedan gets 24mpg, but on the freeway, at 65mph, they get about 27mpg. installed quality brake pads, rotors and hardware all around on both, new plugs and wires on both, new radiator on sedan, power flushed brake lines, new rear shocks on both, total of about $500 plus my labor. I have another $500 in new parts in the garage waiting to install..(an exhaust, struts, strut mounts, motor mounts, heater control valve)..those preventative measures should keep them both running safely, comfortably and very reliably for about another 3 years.

Like another post said, sure beats $36,000 for new car payments...and insurance is less expensive also.

just my $.02

We bought a 940 wagon with 100,000 miles on it about two years ago. I have gone through most of the "zero miles" maintenance list in the FAQ with this car. It needed a new radiator and crank position sensor when I got it. Other than those two repairs, the car has been totally reliable. The electrical system, while a little bit more complex than the 240, is very well made and more rugged. The computer control has been trouble free.

We are very pleased with the car. If you get a wagon, go with a '93 - '95 since these models have an automatically retracting rear seat headrest which makes the fold-down super convenient.

IF you maintain it mostly by yourself and can buy parts online, then by all means it is a good buy.

I absolutely love my 940! Purchased two months ago, not at all difficult to work on. Your skills will rise to meet any challenge the car might present you with, plus the brickboard is always here.

Six Volvos: all wagons.... 1972 145S, 1976 245 DL, 1983 245 GL, 1986 740 GLE, 1990 740 GL, now a 1995 940. Number 7 (a 1967 122S Wagon) is on the way.... Who needs a sedan, when you've got storage compartments in a wagon?

Absolutely, even if you find one with 150,000 miles. it is worth the money.

I concur with everyone else. You can't go wrong with a red block. Note, however, that the shocks, struts and bushings start showing wear at the 100-125K mark. Also the radiator, alternator and starter will likely need replacing at 120-150K. However, tou can do much of the work yourself or have any competent independent mechanic do it with your parts (which are widely available).

Good luck!
