'81 Flywheel into a '90? 200

I am almost ready to replace the clutch in my son's driver. It's a 1990 wagon which has, hard to believe, 190 Kmi (!!!) on the original clutch. Once it is started, I have to get the job done as quickly as possible. So, since I already have a freshly surfaced flywheel from an "81 sedan I would like to use it in the '90 wagon. Are the two flywheels the same, or should I allow some time to have the original flywheel cut?

Thanks to all,
Rich

Thanks to all for the good information. Now if I can just find a machine shop with one hour, or even one day, turn-around time, I'll be golden.

Thanks again,
Rich

Would like to mention, and you may know this, that you need to mark the flywheel before being removed so that you can assemble back correctly. At least it is this way with an automatic. I don't know much about this, but was told this in the past, and when I saw your post, it reminded me.

Not to mention secondarily that the newer flywheel is the big stepped one used on all M47 cars and M 46 turbos and your early flywheel is the smaller flat one.

All 1989 and later US 240s use an RPM sensor which picks up on the holes drilled in the perimeter of the flywheel. The early flywheel will not work since it does not have the holes.

Have the original one surfaced. The original one is also the pulse wheel for the engine speed sensor and the '81 does not have that on it. The shop that I use charges me about $25.00 and has about a 1 hour turn around. That is about as close to painless as you are going to get when dealing with an automotive machine shop. Make sure you go back together with an OE clutch, Fitchel Sachs or Borg and Beck, replace your rear main seal, and stuff a new pilot bearing in it while you are in there.
