BUYING AND TRYING A no start . 1984 244 GL 200

I am currently the proud owner of a 1984 244gl , 99k . I recently found a non running . car identical to mine except for paint and interior.. He says 2 months he put 500 into it, then on the way to oxnard. from la it broke down and left him stranded.Burned out after putting 500 1 week previous he let it sit for almost two months now..


AS stated the car doesn't start.. Using several life saving technics you guys taught me 4 my own 1984 244 I tried a few tests


The car I am looking at is a 1984 244gl 120,000 k second owner , records available.
. When you turn the key to on posistion . the relay in the glove box clicks once. when you crank it the other relay clicks continously .(The two black relays near the glove box. fuel) The car has more than half a tank of gas and the main pump turns on(when you crank) and appears to be on perfect order. The engine harness looks descent. when you crank it it kinda faintly sounds like it wants to start but nothing..The starter cranks and the enigne tuns over, but wont fire. I want see if I can get her running , then I can start the tedious proscess of . fixing all door handles and the sunroof handle. (none work except for rear passenger. As and added benefit , he has a 1983 244dl that i can use to TEST PARTS . It is runnign

The guy says that when he was driving it he went up it it kinda sputtered he coastd donew the hill fien then on the next hill it cut out,

Ideally i wanted this 200 car for parts . But I would appreciate your help in making her rode worthy. The seller is open to me working on the car before I buy. Also the body is great the interior toasted and needs and least a whole front assembly (thank god 4 pik a part)Any help in gettin this brick on the road appreciated. p.s Iam going back to the car on monday to have it tested. thanks

The Fuel relay clicking continuously sounds wrong to me. It should click (on) and stay on when ignition pulses are detected during cranking.

I'd check the 25 Amp blade fuse fed from the battery, and its wiring, very carefully. We have seen cases where it would pass enough current to energize a relay, which would immediately drop out again, under the added load fed by the relay (like fuel pumps).

Sometimes this up & down cycle is so fast it sounds like the relay is a buzzer.
