Replacing driver's side door glass 700

Someone broke into my car last nite and stole my radio. They smashed the driver's side door glass to get in. Probably shouldn't have too much trouble locating a replacement at the junk yard, however I've never replaced a door glass. Anyone have any hints or recommendations? I looked at the FAQs and they have replacement techniques for the front glass and the small fixed window, but I didn't see anything specific for the driver's side glass. Is this something I can do myself, or will I need to take it to a glass house? Thanks in advance folks.

Not a difficult task. Remove the door panel, your junk yard salavage trip will help you better understand how that's done without breaking anything on your Brick.(check archives for 700 door panel removal) There are two clips holding the window to the sissor regulator, remove the clips, pull the metal base holding the glass free from the regulator and turn the glass and metal base somewhat on end in the door and slide it up out of the glass channel. It's easier to remove those clips with the window partially down but in a salavage yard you deal with where the window was possitioned(usually closed) when the Brick was hauled into the yard. At home running the window down until you can better get at the regulator clips will make things easier. A good time to lube, and tighten up things up in the door, also vacuum any broken glass out of the inner door, keeps things neat and the glass won't end up blocking any drain openings. Hope this helps.

Don;t forget to check the regulator as well. 700

I've done thismyself. Not too bad. Avoiding damage to the door panel is your biggest challenge. Also be sure the junkyard gives you a window with the metal channel bracket on the bottom intact and attached. If it's gone or out of alignment, it will be a royal PITA to get it back "just right"

Also, if you have the plastic regulators this a great time to check it for cracks and loose nuts.

Have "fun"

Thanks folks. Found the glass at the junkyard. It was a bit of a challenge to figure out how to locate the clips with the glass fully closed, but thanks to the responses I was at least expecting them to be there, and they were on the back side of the glass (as I was working mostly from the inside angle). It was a cinch to put it back in, and it's working fine. Now just gotta find a reasonable tint shop and I'll be back in business.

My cassette/CD/radio was stolen, and I was considering buying a stock VOLVO radio/cassette to replace it. Don't use the CD too much and it might even be a temptation for some knucklehead to try it again. I saw two units while I was in the junkyard and both had an "anti-theft" label on the radio housing, and I presume that means it's more difficult to remove with conventional tools. If I wanted to take one of those out of a junked vehicle, are there any special tools I might need, and what all should I take while I'm there.

Thanks again.

If you buy a radio at the junkyard it may need a code to activate. Maybe the dealer will give you the code if you have a receipt from the yard and can prove that it wasn't stolen. May also need a chassi number. Check with dealer what's needed before spending the money for a radio.

T-bone pretty much laid it out for you. Make sure you go the extra mile and get all of the glass out. You need a decent vacuum and the crack and crevice tool works pretty good there. Do not be afraid to pull the felt covered rubber mouldings out of the guide channels to get them cleaned of glass as well. Obviously your window was in the up position when someone thoughtfully blew it out so most of the glass is going to be on the front seat and elsewhere. When doing door glass I find it is easier to remove one or both of the rubber glass guide pieces that run inside of each guide channel, front and rear. It gives you a lot more room to angle the glass in and once your glass is in place just put some lube (vaseline if nothing else) on the back of it and slide it right down between the channel and the glass. While you are at the bone yard "borrow" any little bits you might need like the lock knob, extra regulator clips, red washers, and door panel retainers.
