Shuddering steering rack - UPDATE 900 1992

Update on my shuddering steering problem.

Well, I decided to do the easy thing first. With the engine off, I drained the fluid in the PS pump reservoir and re-filled it with fresh synthetic trans fluid. I knew that I was not changing out a whole lot of fluid, but gave it a shot. The old fluid was smelly, dirty, and a bit "metallic" looking...hmmmm. Within 50 miles, the shuddering stop and has not occurred since. I'll be changing all of it the next chance I get.

LESSON LEARNED: CHANGE FLUIDS REGULARLY

It sounds like you left a little air in there. I certainly hope M1 tranny fluid is a proper fluid.

Ugh oh, what's this about incompatible fluids?

The Mobil 1 synthetic ATF specs seem to cover just about any hydraulic situation.

I have used it for 2 years in the 93 960 with no problem. It did lessen steering shudder but it took new tie rods and an alignment to banish it (mostly!).

That's a good news, since I have a same issue on my 965.

By the way, Dextron-III is not suited to PS. You can substitute PS fluid with Dext-II, but not Dext-III. Dext-III WILL harm your ps.

Vernon,
Where do you get your Dexron II? I have not been able to find it for years, just Dexron III that says it replaces Dexron II.

Thanks, that's good information for everyone out there.

MAKE SURE TO USE THE CORRECT TYPE/GRADE OF FLUID FOR YOUR ENGINE, TRANSMISSION, DIFFERENTIAL, BRAKES, POWER STEERING, AND RADIATOR.

the fluid is not your problem. you can use all trans fluids including f type and mercon and dexron. If you have consistent shudder there is air in the system or the seals are leaking so bad in the rack that you will not be able to repair it by changing fluid. one day driving will burp any air out of a steering system, they are small make sure yoiu dont have a mechanical problem also. check your ball joints and control arm bushings.
