Long Live the 740 700

Hello All,
Let me preface this post by saying that without this forum and the local U-Pull-It yard, I would have probably moved onto something newer. Thanks for the help.
I've got a leaky water pump. Put a new one in March 2004 when I bought the Brick on E-bay. Done lots of preventative repairs, mostly due to my anal obsessive behavior and this forum. Do these pumps always leak from that little O-ring donut between the head and pump? Its leaking enough for me to see coolant on the pump and front of the block. I'm going to pull the pump and reseal when I have the time. I'll be doing the heater hoses and valve as well.
Any tips?
Also noticed bushings for the Panhard rod have perished. Ordered a new set of Poly bushings from IPD. Anybody do these at home? Will I need a press or can I improvise? Tips anyone?
I've really become attached to this Old clunker and want to see her go until she rusts away like every old car here in Upstate NY.
She's got about 130,000 miles and runs great. I'm getting about 18 mpg city/ 25 mpg hwy. Put some Bilsteins and IPD sways om her recently. LONG LIVE THE 740!
Sorry for the long post, and thanks for the help.

Leaking waterpump seal (upper seal that mates to the engine head) 700

Regarding the leaking upper water pump seal, I would suggest using a bit of RTV on the seal and on the waterpump nuts (to keep them from loosening up). Also, you must lever the waterpump upwards when tightening the nuts to give it a good tight seal to the head.

Lastly, if you're still using a Grey-150 high-pressure cooling system cap, consider switching to a lighter duy cap (White-100 or Black-75). This subject was covered in a recent post:

God bless,

Now is a good time for me to ask 700

What is a panhard rod and where is it? And what is a track rod and what is it? Hope I get some answers here or else I'll have to make a new posting. :)

Thanks!

A Panhard rod is an early 20th century French invention which is some form of lateral support for a rigid axle i.e. stops it moving side to side. Do Google search for more info.
A Track Rod is a tie rod i.e. linking the steering together. In the UK we generally talk about track rods rather than tie rods and having the tracking set/adjusted rather than alignment. Hope this helps. Regards.

They frequently leak from the rubber donut. Many folks apply a little RTV to prevent this: see the 700/900 FAQ.

130K, she's barely broken in!

I have an '86 245 (soon to leave for a new owner) that's darn close to 400K, with serious rust.

Some suspect that converting to an electric fan takes mechanical stress off the pump, maybe it would last longer that way. I may try, if I get around to that project.
