I read in the FAQ about switching out the ZF22 to the AW71 tranny. In calling several salvage yards they all indicate that doing this on a diesel isn't possible. So, is the FAQ steps for gas engines only? Pricing I'm getting is $450-$500 for torque converter and tranny.

i'm in the same fix and everyone that i've spoken to about it says the same thing; no, the deisel block has a different bolt pattern and switching bellhousings won't do it either.
where are these zf22s you're talking about? i need one and depending on mileage and guessed condition, those aren't bad prices.

I have done a little more research and discovered that BMW 3 Series used the same tranny. So this will help in finding more trannies and hopefully lower prices. I wonder if it matters if the same tranny comes off of a gas model?
