Can any harm come from running briefly without the thermostat? S90-V90 1997

I ordered a new thermostat for my 1997 960 and plan to swap it out since I'm going to be flushing the coolant. Since I'm going to have it out anyway, is there any harm in letting the engine idle with the thermostat removed to aid in flushing out the old coolant?

The thermostat in my BMW was stuck open, but I was still able to drive it until I had a chance to replace it. The engine would never fully warm up, but it didn't do any damage. Unless I'm missing something, I don't see why I couldn't run the Volvo (idling in park) for a few minutes with it removed.

So long as the system is sealed up the only problem I could forsee would be logging a 123 ECT code because it never really warmed up. Other than that I would think it would not give you much grief. You say you only plan on running that way for a few minutes, which is good because I would not run it like that for any extended periods.

I just plan to run it long enough to flush the coolant.
