Anyone fiberglass a rotted tailgate on a 245 ?? 200

There is metal missing on the lower edge. I am not going for a win in any cosmetics, just want some struture and a decent deal at the back end. Was going to use some fiberglass to rebuild the areas. Anyone done a similar repair ?

Does structure even matter anymore? Just run a line of black duct tape across the bottom and call it a day!

    Dman:
get thyself to the nearest junkyard...find a nonrusted tailgate...remove,repaint or....leave a different color for that 'urban warfare' look.
    cheers,

      I second this suggestion.

If you can't find one in your area, see if you can find one somewhere else. Maybe you can make a trade with someone.

If the things weren't so big, I'd be happy to ship one off to you. There are plenty of U-Pullits here full of un-rusted 240s of all vintages.

What year is your wagon? (I'm guessing '86, but it may be later.)

Only problem - Up here in the Michigan snow/salt belt - most of these cars are already pretty rusted up. They are hard to come by, without travel to another state.

I'd say it might be worth a trip - anything removeable like doors/tailgate is much easier to replace if you can.

PS I think the reverse light cover you're missing can be got separately - stick on with silicone sealant.

the track that holds the rubber seal for the rear deck might be rusted out along the bottom also - you can cut a piece off a parts deck (or off a door) and blind rivet it in place.
bondo makes a filler that's reinforced with fiberglass strands - if you grind off as much rust as you can, then come back with that and sand it, you could achieve a presentable, paintable repair. bondo also makes some red stuff that comes in a tube - you put that on as a last filler before painting. it's cheap and easy to use.
experts do better with it, but I've found that you can't expect too much with fiberglass/metal bonding - it will last a few years if you do a reasonably good job with preparation and application.
