See if you can get your hands on an old accessory parts list from a dealer, and see what models of radio were plug-n-play, and which later radios could be plug-n-play with a wiring adapter. then see which ones are compatible with the separate equalizer (many, I believe!). Generally all the models of Volvo radio available in a given span of years will be interchangeable in terms of wiring, with the variable being how much money the buyer wanted to spend. However, I don't recall if the '86 was a standard -sized single din or not; this may make a difference. The single-din CR-814 in my ancient Dodge truck is held in with wooden wedges and chunks of foam rubber.
Frankly, for quality in a moving car, the Alpine-made Volvo audio stuff is pretty good. The best upgrade for the buck is in good speakers, rather than newer electronics.
If you have a junkyard handy, get radio wiring harnesses and connectors from pre-'88, '88-92, and '92-99 Volvos, so you can look at making your own wiring adapters. If, e.g., you want capability for the EQ and for an external CD changer, the CR 814 commonly found in '88-'92, or the CR 915 from '92-98 or so will work fine. The 814 takes an external amp; the 915 does not.
Spend some time browsing around the archives with the search function--there is wiring info, some radio interchange info, and I'm pretty sure there are a post or two with the part numbers for adapting radios from one era of wiring to another.
