Looking for radio..... 700 1986

I'm looking for a radio for my 1986 740t.
It works with separate equalizer unit.
Yes, I realize I can get something newer
and of better quality. However, I am sucker
for the original. Where can I start to look ?

    Hi,
I have just parked my good old faithful 760 turbo wagon.

The radio and cassette deck are available if still required.

    Take care,

    Rhodee

    Calvin,
I have a pre 89 TD-6141, the type with a "zillion" plugs and wires, not the integrated single black connector the later models have, that I picked up by mistake while looking for the integrated type. Contact me off list if you're still looking.

Believe it or not, most newer radios are made like crap.

The old Volvo radios (at least, in the 200 cars) have very high quality units. AM is very wideband, and FM doesn't have any Blend to mono. (In other words, Music on AM sounds almost as good as FM, and FM Stereo actually stays in Stereo.)

Newer AM radios are super narrow band. Many sound worse then a telephone. It's down right pathetic as far as I'm concerned. While some people don't care about blend to mono on FM, I absolutely hate it. If I'm listening to a Stereo broadcast, I don't think it's too much to ask that the radio STAY in Stereo!

    Good luck in your search.

See if you can get your hands on an old accessory parts list from a dealer, and see what models of radio were plug-n-play, and which later radios could be plug-n-play with a wiring adapter. then see which ones are compatible with the separate equalizer (many, I believe!). Generally all the models of Volvo radio available in a given span of years will be interchangeable in terms of wiring, with the variable being how much money the buyer wanted to spend. However, I don't recall if the '86 was a standard -sized single din or not; this may make a difference. The single-din CR-814 in my ancient Dodge truck is held in with wooden wedges and chunks of foam rubber.
Frankly, for quality in a moving car, the Alpine-made Volvo audio stuff is pretty good. The best upgrade for the buck is in good speakers, rather than newer electronics.

If you have a junkyard handy, get radio wiring harnesses and connectors from pre-'88, '88-92, and '92-99 Volvos, so you can look at making your own wiring adapters. If, e.g., you want capability for the EQ and for an external CD changer, the CR 814 commonly found in '88-'92, or the CR 915 from '92-98 or so will work fine. The 814 takes an external amp; the 915 does not.
Spend some time browsing around the archives with the search function--there is wiring info, some radio interchange info, and I'm pretty sure there are a post or two with the part numbers for adapting radios from one era of wiring to another.
