I've heard some pretty bad knocks, but this........! 120-130 1966

Ben called me up this evening, sounding somewhat more alert than usual.
He had borrowed a cel phone from somebody he was with and reported that the
Celery Wagon was making some "really bad noises" and one of his associates
opined that it might be piston rings. I've had piston rings go bad and they
were usually pretty silent. He was almost to Osage Hills State Park, about
15 miles west of town. So I drove out there with the Volvo Taurus and he
was there with 3 friends. We opened the hood and I told him to start it up.
ˇˇMercy!! The most awful internal clanking I've heard! I had him shut it
down immediately. I brought him and his friends home and arranged to pick him
up in the 164 at 6 on Monday morning (gotta have him to Tulsa at 12:00 to enter
the Navy). I put the chain and pipe in the trunk of the 164 and was in the
house relaxing a bit when my wife suggested I call a wrecker. Scottish as I
am I was reluctant and even more so when I talked to the prestige vehicle
recovery service here in town and they quoted about $120. Out of curiosity
I called another fellow and he said it would probably be around $80. So we
went out with him and he picked it up and brought it home - turned out to be
$90, still a bargain in my wife's opinion. I strongly suspect that it threw
a rod or was far along in the process of doing so from the nature and location
of the cranking, not far from the fuel pump. I'll keep you posted when I
tear it down. The gray wagon has a stock B18 that may be in good shape (I've
not run it so far) and if it runs OK, I'll just swap it in and build up another
for the gray wagon, whose body is in better shape and has leather upholstery.
One thing for sure about the celery wagon's engine - it is NOT a damaged
timing gear!! I've heard plenty of them and this was a LOT worse!
Have a great Memorial Day!
ps: I'll call Ben at 6 in the morning. He needs to get used to waking up early!

Hi George,

That is bad luck, I am curious what you will find in there.
Probably rod knock you hear, I have seen a few occasions where the rod bolts stretched/ came loose. If it threw a rod you would probably have a hole in the side of the block, maybe you caught just it in time.

I am prepping a set of M-rods for my B20 now. I still had the weak and heavy '74 rods.

Let us know what you find.

B.R

Stefan

I have a spare crank and plenty of rods for 6-bolt engines.
As soon as I can get out from under my aunt's estate I will be
tearing into it. It was a very distinct metallic clank, much
louder than the knock you get with a timing gear.

The B18 'Bofor' rods are weaker than the B20 6 bolt rods. So if you have the choice, use the B20 rods.

Bofors is a pretty good name in armament. How do you tell them apart?
I guess B30 rods are the same as B20....

I dunno, when my cam gear came apart long ago in my PV's B18 it sounded worse than when the 2.1 liter B20 spun a rod bearing last summer. Not all dead cam gears are alike - when the separate from the center I think they can bounce around more and make more serious sounding noises.

Try to determine where the sound is coming from, although frankly that can be difficult without a stethoscope - the sound travels all over in the block and inside the engine compartment.

When does it make the sound? If it is worse at idlt but settles down when revved up that is a pretty good indication that it is the cam gear. My spun rod bearing was quiet at idle, and only started hammering as the revs went up and the pedal went down.

Doesn't sound like it is in the timing cover. Sounds like between the
distributor and the fuel pump. I will pull the timing cover first though.

Oooooh, I wanna play! 120-130 1966

Maybe a bent pushrod?

(although bad rod bearing sounds more likely).

Um, perhaps a bad wrist pin?

I like these games (but only when I'm guessing). Only certain thing is someone's gonna pay for a new engine!

There aren't any NEW B20s! But I am certainly gonna get to do some work!
Question is, which of the 3 dead ones has the highest probability of being
in operation soon???

LOL, I'm sorry, that was mean.

Of course I meant you will have to make a "new" engine. That's half the reason I even mess with old cars!
