I've heard some pretty bad knocks, but this........! 120-130 1966

I dunno, when my cam gear came apart long ago in my PV's B18 it sounded worse than when the 2.1 liter B20 spun a rod bearing last summer. Not all dead cam gears are alike - when the separate from the center I think they can bounce around more and make more serious sounding noises.

Try to determine where the sound is coming from, although frankly that can be difficult without a stethoscope - the sound travels all over in the block and inside the engine compartment.

When does it make the sound? If it is worse at idlt but settles down when revved up that is a pretty good indication that it is the cam gear. My spun rod bearing was quiet at idle, and only started hammering as the revs went up and the pedal went down.
