Mann or K&N Oil Filter??? 200

I've been a Mann Oil Filter guy ever since I've owned my 240... My Corvette driving roommate raves about his K&N Gold Performance Oil Filter...

So what are your thoughts? It's hard to find auto parts stores near me that carry the Mann filters (without having them ordered or shipped from FCP or IPD) and these K&N filters would be much more accessible.

I know the Fram filters are crap (or so I've heard/read) but I LOVE the K&N air filter products so Im sure it cant be all that bad...

Anyhow, let me know what you think! Thanks

I have used a K&N Filtercharger and Gold Oil Filter since I've owned my '79 245 for a year. I take pride in running the best oil, filters, and fuel my car to make it last. I couldn't believe how much more superior the air filter looked than the Fram from the previous owner. It also says on the box that the
K&N air filter yields 140 cfm more air than stock air filters.

K$N?! Sounds like you watch too much tv. Their powerful advertisement campaign obviously has you fooled. Higher flow may equal one or two extra ponies but at the cost of filtering. You're gonna ruin your nice Volvo with that aftermarket crap!

whoa, its all gravy dude... If i didn't know better, I'd think you were working for Mann Filtration.

I was just asking, so no need to get upset

If you have the room, larger is better. More filtering, and more oil to get to the parts. I find the Mann is small.
I use Bosch 72174, or any 3569 numbered filter.
Also the large filter for Ford V8s will fit and adds to the quantity of oil in the system.
I don't keep my oil in the engine for much more than a month, and these cars will run on anything anyway...
Change frequency is more important than brands, but having extra oil volume is a good thing.

Wow, changing the oil every month? How many miles/km's is that? When I got my first BMW (used 2002), I used to change the oil every 2000 miles. Needless to say, that didn't last forever...

My ex-mechanic had a good point, most engine damage is done upon startup right after an oil change. So, his take was overdoing it is counterproductive. Me, I try and compensate somewhat for that by filling the oil filter part way so some oil is in the system at startup. The mechanic felt that every 3-4k miles was a good change interval. Makes sense to me.

IMO - I think that the 5k miles interval that Volvo recommends is fine too. That is about the time when an oil filter stops being as effective as it should be. I try and change my oil every 3-4k, but if it slips to 5k I don't sweat it...Drove my VW 281k with oil changes every 5-7k, engine still ran well when it was totalled!

Just order a case of Mann filters from FCP or IPD (think of it as the same price youd pay for an oil change if you took the car to someone) and then you're set for a while.

Can't be all bad? I dunno. Although K&N air filters provide for more airflow, they allow more dirt to go in too.

IIRC, K&N oil filters are made by Champion Labs. Decent filters, though not the highest in filtering area. I would suspect it more inline with the Motorcraft FL-300 (228 sq.in.) than with the Mann W917 (316 sq.in.). FWIW, the Fram PH7328 comes in with an estimate of a mere 111 sq.in. of filtering area.
