Ok two questions today, just took the door panel off the back of my car to try and fix the handle so it will activate the unlocking mechinism.
There is a little plastic do hicky that is broken on the handle that hooks to a wire to make every thing work. The little plastic part is broken,where can one obtian such .
Front door went out two years ago and an indy fixed it that time, had to buy a handle and have it painted to match car, thats a little much. Same part was broken last time as now.
Anyone have a better idea

Without having seen said doohickey, this may or may not work.

I did it on the dome light switch handle on my first Volvo, a 1977 245. The dome light switch was a straight piece, moved through three positions for the light control. Center off, front with doors, rear on all the time.

The switch handle broke off. There was enough "stump" left to make a dowel joint. Drilled a 1/6-inch hole in each "stump", as straight as my calibrated eyeball could make them. Then I found a small nail, brad, whatever, that fit the hole snugly. Did some trial fitting and snipping. Finally covered the nail with glue (forget if it was super glue or epoxy) and stuck things into place. Used a rubber band as a clamp.

Worked like a charm, even though the switch handle had a tiny bend in it.

If your broken doohickey has enough stump, you might try this re-hab.

Well depending upon which doo-hickey it is can't you just get a used handle and swap the parts over?

I have thought about doing just that,the main problem is that the plastic catch, or (do hicky) is very subject to break again with a used part.

Well, that being the case, can you buy a brand new handle and transfer the doo-hickey onto your already painted assembly?

I can respect being frugal but here is the deal:


CHEAP, FAST, OR GOOD. You can pick any TWO you want. Now most people want it cheap and good and I can relate to that but it just won't happen anytime fast. Like your situation, how long do you think it will take you to find a new or near new door handle at the bone yard? I'm saying in the end you will settle for a used part and when it is all said and done with you will have not gotten anything but cheap, not fast and not particularily good. So with all that being said get your cheap butt over to pick a part and get the best door handle you can come up with and be done with it. At that rate you will at least got it cheap and fast, right?

Yeah -I gots my eye on one thats down at the boneyard all ready: just eyeballing the seen here to see if there is an alternitive.
Looks like Volvo would have built a metal part to replace this peice of crap that keeps breaking on all the 700 and 900 series veheicles thay made.

Well you see that is the funny thing I have never ever seen the plastic parts break in there. I have seen plenty of them with the pin that has fallen out and you have to take it apart and stuff the new and improved roll pin in it but never seen one of the plastic pieces break. I'm saying you must be special because this kind of stuff doesn't happen to just any Volvo owner. :)

This is the secound time for this to happen, I'm on the road with my job around 30 to 40k a year, The handle on the drivers door went first, then the door in the back on the drivers side. Would the plastic part from a car on the back passengers side work , or are the plastic parts right and lefts like the door handles? Like the ones that are breaking are diffenitly getting the most use of course.

The handles themselves are definitely left and right but I would imagine that some of the stuff in there is symetrical and it would not matter if you flipped it over. The wishbone looking affair that the wrist pin goes through and the linkage goes through on the other end looks pretty much symetrical, meaning that it looks the same left to right and front to back so that it would not matter if you flipped the little bugger. This is the piece that always came loose on them back in the day, I do not know if it is the same piece that is breaking on yours, if it is then I would say it does not matter left to right.

Mark--it is the same part that I've been calling a doohickey,,Just came back from my local dealership in Danville Va. They have a number of 960's in the back juncked, and told me I could have what ever off of them.
The place is shutting thier doors and the bank guys were eyeballing me while I was around the cars. The vehicles were of the 93 and 94 models with a different outside handle as mine and a different configuration on the inside door panel,so I didn't take em down, gotta look elsewhere now, for one to fit my 97 model---DRAT

Well is there any chance that they both use the same doohickey and that you could canabalise one door handle to make the other one work?

Thanks for the responces Mark, I found one at a diferent yard thats gonna work,25 bucks later and the part looks fine and the door handle is the same color, better than the 80 bucks and a new paint job
