1986 240 ignition control unit wiring / connections 200

I know the connection at the ignition control unit is not very good. I need to wiggle the plug at times for the car to start. There are sleeves on some of the pins but I am not certain if another pin may be the problem or one of the pins with a sleeve is the culrpit. I've thought about soldering wires on to each pin at the control unit and wiring in my own harness unless I can get some better ideas from you all. Maybe if I could release the female connectors I could squeeze them a bit to improve the connection. I've tried deoxit to try improving it, but this is going on two years and I think a permanent fix is needed. I haven't really thought of a new control module and harness from the factory. Probably costs more that the car is worth....

Thanks, Chad

I would try an ICU AND it's wiring harness from a 1988 240

the wiring of the '88s was much improved over the '86 wire that degrades with heat

if you pull the ICU without disconnecting it from the harness than you shouldn't have to worry about any loose connections in there. Just leave it plugged in and install it as is.

'88's are often available from pick n pull yards

not too hard to pull out although I think you may have to kneel down near the passenger side footwell to unplug it and thread it into the engine compartment... but I'm not sure about that, it may all be in the engine compartment.

if you are real zealous get the whole engine wiring harness and replace your old degrading '86 harness.

    good luck

    jack
