Passenger Side Engine Mount 200 1983

I notice the rubber part of my passenger side engine mount is getting distorted. I figured I would take a look at how difficult a job this is going to be to replace the rubber. Driver's side is fine.

I believe I will remove the nuts on the donut, then remove either the top or bottom mount bracket. The forward, lower bolt of the top mount bracket seems to be accessible only with a crow foot and long extension bar [no room to move a flat wrench or fit a socket]. Looks like it will be best to remove the lower bracket. Any suggestions?

Also it appears the right side of the engine will need to be raised about an inch which seems like a lot, or am I missing something here?

Thank you gentleman. Your detailed guidance is most appreciated. The electricals are second nature to me. The mechanicals, well, I need all the help I can get!

Thanks again.

Messy job, but a DIY for sure. You will have to lift the engine a bit, not much. The method from Macs245 sounds good to me.

Do the job with the car on ramps. Drop the gravel pan and start scraping off the crud around the lower motor mount bracket. (Good Idea to put some old newspapers to catch the stuff.)

Then remove the nuts on the bolts holding the bottom bracket to the crossmember.

Go topside. Lift the engine. Loosen the center nut on the motor mount, and remove the bolts holding the upper bracket to the block. YES, have the oil filter removed.

Try to remove the upper bracket, mount, and lower bracket as a unit.

Loosely reassemble them with the new mount, and put things back together.

Have plenty of hand cleaner and paper towels handy.

Celebrate.

Call your dealer and tell the service writer that your friend in college at (pick a place 200 miles away) was complaining that he/she had to pay $200 for just that one motor mount and you want to know if that's fair? The writer might tell you what it would cost as his place, usually those guys don't say anything but "We'll have to check it out, bring the car in" and this little rain dance is to get around that answer.

Good Luck,

Bob

It is not real difficult, but as you noted access IS limited.

I used a 4"x4" beam across the hood opening, 1/2" eye bolt through the beam & hooked to the block via the lift lug by the thermostat. Raised the engine about an inch or so, watch to make sure you don't apply too much load!

One thing I did not do, BUT ABSOLUTELY WILL if I ever do this job again, REMOVE the oil filter. Can't hurt to do an oil change anyway. Since I did not remove the oil filter, it probably doubled the time, and trippled the frustration!

The driver's side is really straight forward compared to passenger side. I would recommend doing both while you're at it.

I can't remember anything else. Not too bad a job, just dirty & time consuming if you don't change the oil.

Mike

i agree with macs245. i was goint to replace just the passenger side mount but the parts place have the drivers side in stock so i went ahead and got it. when i replace it i found that the mount had come apart from the rubber. it looked good until i picked up the motor. you might as will do both while your dirty.

Thanks for the quick reply. Good point regarding the oil filter.

Which bracket did you remove? Upper or lower?

With the oil filter still on, I think I had to remove both the upper & lower brackets. Or at least loosen the bolts on both.

Without the oil filter the job will be straight forward. I'm not sure which will be easier but access will be great w/o oil filter.

Mike
