Does anyone know what the min. thickness should be for the front rotors? 200

I need to replace my front bearings and my front rotors so I thought I would look for the complete rotor w/bearings at the pick n pull tomorrow.

The bearings are expensive and since I need to do the front brakes also, I figured it would be cheaper to get some used ones if they still have some meat left.

So.....how much meat is required for the machine shop to be able to turn them?

Thanks in advance.

Volvo reccomends NEVER using turned rotors, if I recall correctly.

I just got two new vented rotors at Autozone for $27/each.
I believe they were around 0.95" thick. They fit perfectly on my '89 240.

Besides the crowbar trick to pull the old rotor off,
I would also recommend taking the brake pads out to make it
easier to slip the caliper off and back on.

As for wear, I seem to recall 0.80" for vented with new ones runninng 0.89" or so. But I would not turn or use turned rotors, I do not think it is recommended thin them just so they look smooth.

BP does a one eighty 200

By golly, Robert, you said one little word that makes me see the light.
Yes, the minimum spec is given but it's a wear spec, isn't it? I could wear 1/16th of an inch off of my solid rotors on my '80 and it would be time to change them. Why then do I think I can have them machined to 1/16th under new thickness? It just puts them to the point of needing to be replaced.
When it's time for brakes on the '89 I' gettin' new rotors if the present ones are too badly worn.

Keep this in mind, Kyle.

I checked and Bentley says new ones are 0.945" and the minimum is 0.80" but I seem to remember that the ones I examine are no more than 0.90. Of course I carry a micrometer and look for unworn rotors on salvage yard cars. I know, cheap, but once you get on the economizer mode with a 240 it is impressive how many parts can be found.

Bentley sez:
Solid front rotors are .563" new and the minimum thickness is .5".
Vented front rotors new are .945" and the min. is .803".
Maximum runout is .004".

Bulletproof sez:
If you're dead set on resurfacing rotors, work with the ones you have. If they can't be surfaced within spec, buy new ones.

Other people sez:
Never resurface a rotor. Just buy new.

Thank's a lot Bulletproof.

I have always had good luck with having the rotors resurfaced.

I needed to replace the bearings so I'm going to see if I can get the whole assembly and hopefully I can find some good ones.

Thanks again.

Kyle
