lefr rear turn indicator out - no power 200

vehicle is 91 245 auto - in the past left rear turn indicator worked on and off (although 'bulb out' indicator on dash never lit up). when it didnt work, front left turn indicator flashed very fast. mechanic friend said wire was loose in the connector located in back of pedals under carpet and perhaps it would have to be re-soldered. a little kick to that area always made the light work again. now it is totally dead no matter where i kick and pulling back the carpet does not show any connector. using a test lamp i checked for power at the blue wire that supplies power to left rear turn indicator bulb socket and there is none. swapped out left bulb & socket w/right and still nothing (altho left bulb & socket work in right rear so it's a good unit). would like to trace this blue wire back but is there a connection under pedals or was he blowing smoke up my dress? if he was, where does this blue wire go to - direct to the fuse panel, or is there something else to look for - by the way, i also just replaced the 1157 left rear brake lite which was also out (but again, the 'bulb out' indicator on the dash didnt lite up to tell me that - the police did when he pulled me over...however the 3rd brake lite is out (due to a bad left side tailgate harness) and that sets off the 'bulb out' dash indicator every time. am i going crazy or what? many thanks brickers for your help in the past and a continued very enjoyable daily read. brgds garry mawhinney

try using only European bulbs....even though some books say use 1156/1157, they can cause problems...........

No need to splice anything.

The brake lights circuit (again, on my 1988 240) runs through the bulb failure warning system (henceforth BFWS).

Left and center brake lights must balance current load with right brake light. Yes, I know that seems illogical, but the BFWS relay has modified internal coils or somethng so that they CAN balance.

Your checking for voltage at the light connectors is a good place to start. Points out the problem being as either in the rear or up front.

Keep on trucking Rolling,

Bob

I can only give you what I have on an '88 240.

Your '91 may or may not be different.

The wires to the turn signals are both found in the main front-to-rear harness, along with a gang of other wires.

Green wire is left turn. Blue wire is right. They run from the rear, in that harness, to a 9-pin connector that is around the driver's left toe. It may be stuffed into the wire cover, or hung up above the knee pad.

One side of the connector has slot #3=one green in, two greens out. Slot #4 is one blue in, two blues out.

That connector may be the one your tech is talking about. That fat harness runs under the driver's seat in a little channel, then under the wire cover, and then it's up to inside the dash stuff.

You will need to remove the knee pad and peel back the carpet. The wire cover is a piece of galvanized sheet metal, held in place with a single screw. Remove the screw (and put is somewhere safe) and manipulate the wire cover off.

You should see a number of connectors and relays in the upper part of what was covered. Use the colors listed above to identify the connector in question.

Here's all nine:

Starting upper left -

#1 GR = gray...Fuel level.

#2 R-Y = red-yellow...Fuel pump.

#3 GN = green...Left turn.

#4 BL = blue...right turn.

#5 W = white...rear fog light (s)

#6 Y-GR = yellow-gray...Left brake light.

#7 Y = white...Right brake light.

#8 BL-R = blue-red...tailgate washer.

#9 SB = black.,,back-up lights.

I hope this helps.

Good Luck,

Bob

not to answer my own post, but i need to correct the colour of the wire going to power the left rear turn indicator - it is blue/green. however, i followed the wiring harness as it snakes underneath the tailgate to power the right side and found the blue wire that powers the right rear turn indicator. is there any danger of splicing off of that blue line and going directly to the left turn indicator and bypass the seemingly dead blud/green wire? shortcut for sure, but safe? i was a radioman in the uscg back in the 70's and what they taught us about electricity you could safely store in one of your earlobes. 'am; was amplitude modulation, 'fm' was frequency modulation and anything else was 'pfm' (pure f--cking magic). when you got to pfm, you had to call an electonics tech (the original 'et'). so if i sound like an electric idiot, it's because i am (by design). tks again everyone
