Removing/repalcing black tape below older 244 door windows 200 1989

We have a "new" 1990 244 DL, maroon in color. The black tape-like material on the top of the doors buckled and cracked, and needs to be removed. I have two questions.

- Does anybody know an efficient (e.g. quick) way to remove this stuff without harming the paint below? It just doesn't want to pull off in bigh chunks.

- Short of painting, is there any good substitute for the original tape?

Thanks.

PS - Our #1 son just had his FOURTH crash with a 244 (one totaled '91, three crashes in his current '90). Two of the four were his fault. Only one was his fault. He and his passengers have come through all four without a scratch. I'm about to head home to check on the latest damage. Wish me luck...

Shoe polish 200 1989

Believe it or not, hard black shoe polish works pretty well. Apply carefully! Tried it about 1 1/2 years ago. Just about time to redo it now....

Matches OEM and can be cut to length-width-curvature or original.
this is same stuff a pinstripe shop would use.

hello,
i've been spraying my tape on my 86 with SEM trim black (p/n 39143), which leaves a rougher surface than the tape, but it lasts and a good substitute when tape is hard to find.

it's matte black and you can spray it on just about any metal, too. i'm going to use this stuff (spray can) on my wagon below the cargo window where last year i touched up below the window with por15.

i'm going to use this SEM stuff on my roof rack, and i've used it already on my wipers.

good stuff and it stays on.

about $12/ 15 oz spray can. plenty for the all the trim on your 240. found about it in bb archives.

regards,

Byron - Thanks for the tip about the SEM paint; I'll follow up. Unfortunately, my tape has cracks, so it has to come off even if I decide to go with paint!

go sleep off your hangover, you wrote for the wrong post 200 1989

i don't understand your point.

my black tape at places is scratched up and below my cargo window, the tape is all scratched up and has rusted in some places. i've since repaired the rust spots. since the tape is hard to find, this is a nice option.

also, the tape has faded white in some places on my 86. you want pics before and after of my SEM spray job? or would you like to come to houston and redo the tape on my car? also, my roof rack looks like cr*p--the chrome is rusting off.

eric stauffer had his car nicely painted and the painter painted his tape, too. take a look how nice it turned out:

the SEM spray can makes it all even and new looking. about the roof rack, aren't the late model wagons have all their trim black?

so, i don't get your point.

Heat gun or hair dryer works if it is not fragmented. The equivalent product can be bought from a good pinstriper who knows what it is. The rolls look dark blue with a secondary layer over the black tape. Unfortunately, the rolls I have have absolutely no identifying manufacturer or number anywhere on the roll.

Thanks for the information, Rhaire. Is there a descriptive "name" for this product? Something I could ask for? "Body surface texture paint," or something to that effect?

Do you have any idea how much the stuf costs?

Thanks again!
