Removing/repalcing black tape below older 244 door windows 200 1989

We have a "new" 1990 244 DL, maroon in color. The black tape-like material on the top of the doors buckled and cracked, and needs to be removed. I have two questions.

- Does anybody know an efficient (e.g. quick) way to remove this stuff without harming the paint below? It just doesn't want to pull off in bigh chunks.

- Short of painting, is there any good substitute for the original tape?

Thanks.

PS - Our #1 son just had his FOURTH crash with a 244 (one totaled '91, three crashes in his current '90). Two of the four were his fault. Only one was his fault. He and his passengers have come through all four without a scratch. I'm about to head home to check on the latest damage. Wish me luck...
