240 timing off again... 200

this past week i put a new timing belt in the 244 turbo and it ran great. then i had a couple episodes of non starting. when i would try later, it would sometimes start. they yesterday, after driving around town for an hour or so (with it running great) i brought it home and turned it off. when i went to start it again, no luck. i fiddled around a little and it SEEMED like when i would lift the air flow plate twice and then push it down, and then try it, it would start and run roughly. this morning it won't start at all. pulled back the cover to look at the timing and i think its off time again! is this possible? i will rip it apart and put the timing back on tonight and see if that helps. am i imagining things? can it go from running great to being off time in one day?

i feel like a big dummy, because it wasn't for hours that i realized (just as one of the responses says...) that the timing marks won't probably realign themselves for a lot of rotations after the motor turns over. so the 15 plus times of putting the belt back on its marks this weekend were just an exercise to see how fast i can do it now...

now, with that said, i have to take back what i had stated about the timing being off as soon as i turn the engine over. not having realized that until late sunday night, i had already removed and inspected the distributor and taken off everything i could reach without removing the engine. so now i have to put all this crap back together and start over.

the only thing i DID find to have fault in all the hours spent is that my COLD START INJECTOR does not work, and DOES have 12v to it. i will start a new link with this...

my COLD START INJECTOR does not work, and DOES have 12v to it.

Climate may not be cold enough to ground the CSI through the temp-sensitive
thermo-time switch — in head, below 3rd intake port.

The tensioner nut was tightened on reinstallation, right? It's easy to overlook.

Even if it were tightened, though, if the belt was not perfectly flat on the sprockets it could be come just a little bit loose to allow it to slip off the teeth.

You may use the lines on the timing belt for installation, but do not rely on it once the engine has turned. The timing marks only coincide once every ??? revolutions.
