Long, but please help. 200

First question: 78 244dl: Car was running crappy because of rust in the fuel tank. pulled and sealed the tank using por-15, also put in a new fuel sending unit, the the right one but basically the same. At first i couldnt get the intank fuel pump to work, i couldnt figure it out until i looked at the plug and noticed the the black and gray wires were on the wrong side, i fixed that and now the fuel pump is pumping great. Still, i have a no start. I am getting spark, and i am getting fuel, but it wont start, maybe it is getting too much fuel with the new fuel pumps. Is there a fuel pressure regulator and is it adjustable? Is there a way to see if i am getting too much fuel. I checked to make sure that i was getting fuel by pulling the line off of the fuel filter on the output of it and fuel comes out, plus just to check i ran the fuel pump and watched fuel come out of the filter. So i have spark and i have fuel, why wont it run? It ran before, so i dont think the timing could go off by it sitting there? Maybe i pinched a return line or something when i reinstalled the tank, you think that could even possibly be the problem? Any ideas???

Second question: 85 244 turbo: Bought the car as a no runner, the guy i bought it from said that something is wrong with that thingy over there (points to fuel distributor) lol. so i throw it on a flat bed and take it home. I clean up the f.d. with carby cleaner so i know it isnt stuck shut. I then try to start it and nothing. Probably cause the f.d. isnt open, so i stick a credit card in it to keep it open and bam it runs. take out the credit card and hook up the hoses thinking i have fixed it. try to start it and get a no-start.?! pop the hose off of the f.d. but leave it hooked to the turbo. stick the card back in and start it right up, i check to see if the turbo is sucking and cover the big opening with both of my hands, yeah it is sucking pretty good. So i am thinking that it must be the f.d. While the car is running i try to pick up on the f.d. plate and o.m.g. it is hard to pick up with the car running. It isnt supposed to be that hard is it? It feels like a tella tubby is underneath pulling down on it. You all think i should replace the f.d? Thank you all for any advice, I have two non-running 240 sitting in my moms driveway and I need to get atleast one going lol. Thank you guys very much for any help at all!!!

On the 85 turbo

Your description sounds like the older K-Jet system. This system uses fuel pressure to put "back-force" against the arm the plate is attached to. This prevents the plate from opening up all the way and dumping fuel into the engine.

It sounds as though it has to much pressure. I would make sure the fuel return line is not blocked. Perhaps the fuel pressure valve in the regulator is stuck. If I remember correctly it is mounted in the side of the fuel dist. Looks like a bolt head. You might try removing this and anything that comes out with it and clean. You might also get a bently manual or some other reference, to verify all the components are in correctly.

I know this is not very discriptive, but I hope it helps.

Joe

You have not verified that the engine is actually getting any fuel. I have had to pull off an injector and put it in a glass jar and crank the engine to see if there is indeed fuel coming out of the injector.

I agree that two separate posts would be better, but you don't have the Fuel Pressure Regulator that Scorch mentions. It's internal to the Fuel Distributor and seldom an issue.

How did you run the pump to check for fuel?
Are you sure the Fuel Relay picks (gets energized) while cranking?
If so, can a 2nd person feel or listen to see if the Frequency Valve is buzzing?

Wouldn't hurt to put crank at 0° TDC for #1 cylinder and verify that the Cam and Distributor agree, assuming that spark and fuel are OK.

Try splitting up your problems into two different posts with relevant subject headings. I think you'll get a better response.

The fuel pressure regulator is the round thingy on the front of the fuel rail and is not adjustable. You might pull the vacuum hose to it and smell for the presence of fuel to see if maybe the diaphragm in it is broken, but honestly that's probably not your problem. If your fuel tank was indeed rusty for sure you'll want to replace the fuel filter even if you see fuel coming out. The FI system needs a lot of pressure and you'd at least want to do a flow test to see if indeed you are getting enough fuel. But I would replace the fuel filter no matter what.

Don't know about your turbo problem.

In question one i said i used the right fuel sending unit when I meant to say that it was the wrong fuel sending unit but basically the same and i made it work.
