Fuel smell by intake manifold 200 1980

There's a strong fuel smell around the intake manifold on my 1980 245DL - I don't see any liquid fuel by any of the injector lines or the cold start injector. There's no odor by the fuel filter. Any hints for diagnosing before I have to pull the manifold to get access to the fuel distributor? Any common failures? The car doesn't run any differently than normal. A couple weeks ago I was tugging on injectors 1 and 2 trying to get them to separate from the plastic holders for O-ring replacement with no success but I didn't think I damaged the lines and the fuel smell didn't start until yesterday. Thanks

I wonder if you could do a variation on the hose-to-ear method for finding the source of an unusual noise. You'd probably need a short length of large-diameter vinyl tubing to do it, but would sure be easier than removing the manifold if you don't need to! Just be careful not to hyper-ventilate while sniffing.
