Alternator Pulley 200

84 240Ti... installing a bosch rebuilt 55A alternator supplied w/o pulley... how do I loosen the shaft nut to get the pulley off the bad one? Do I also need a puller?

Thanks

Robert

Thanks for the replies; had one more question: are the pulleys from higher output alternators interchangable with the 55A model?

Thanks

Robert

If you don't have an impact gun I found it was possible to run an old drivebelt around the pulley and clamp the ends (of the belt) as they leave the pulley, in a vice.

Here I mean the pulley is held in a horizontal plane beside one end of the vice jaws, with the belt ends running the length of the jaws.

With a bit of adjustment - using the clamping of the vice jaws to tighten the belt around the pulley, there's enough grip to hold it and take the nut off with a spanner.

Just a note - in europe later (post 1999) Bosch alternators had a woodruff key on the alternator shaft and the nut is a different size.

They are a bear to take off with an impact gun. I went to the local garage and the mechanic blew it off and put it on the new alternator. He ask me to buy him coffee!

I just shoot them off with an impact gun, but if you do not have access to one can you stick a screwdriver through the cooling fins and just far enough inside the alternator that it will lock it up on the housing? I have done that one other than Volvo alternators before and it has worked just fine. No you do not need a puller.
