M 47 -Noise 900

Dear members

I have a 1993 940 Volvo with a M 47 gearbox.
It has the following noise:
the noise only comes when engine runs on idle and no gear engaged. It sounds a bit like klonker - klonker, and once the clutch is depressed, its gone.
It does not come when driving at all, or if the engine is reving with more thatn 1200 rpm.

Any suggestions?

Greetings from ireland, Hans

i had something similar - check your center bearing on your drive shaft. Maybe this one is broken. Once you are driving, the driveshaft is under torque and pressed to one side. Maybe that causes the noise.
PS is there anyone out there in S-CA with a manual 740 and eventually willing to sell??

Sounds like a input shaft bearing. I had a similar noise from a 280z I used to own. Bearing inside trans was shot. Only set me back 11 bucks to replace. Of course you have to drop and open the trans to get it. If you're fairly expirienced you can do it easily.
