I bought this car, with the idea of putting a Ford V/8 in it. I had assumed the v/6 would be bad. It runs good, not great! Can the v/6 be tuned to make it run as well as a 780 Turbo.?

How much did you get the 262C for? The old PRV's don't last like the 4 CYL counterparts but they can run smooth and drive nicely as long as maintenance is done on time with quality products. Since that engine uses the old K-Jet system check for AIR LEAKS. Old vacuum lines, gaskets, and seals are the main reason for bad idle on an old K-Jet System. If you notice a rough idle when the engine is cold also look at a clogged Control Pressure Regulator as a possible cause. If the rough idle is more profound with a warm engine then a faulty Air Aux. Valve and/or fuel mixture control could be your problem. These engines won't very last long but if the body is in good shape you could always go for a Turbo Engine swap and still have a rare bodied Volvo that catches peoples eyes when driving around. If you need any help with the old PRV V6 don't hesitate to drop me a line. I'm a self proclaimed nut of these red-headed step-child engines since I own two of them and I'm still looking for a 79 265GL. Take Care & Enjoy!

Sincerely,

The inherent design of the old frog motor will never run "great". As I've read, the two cams are different to mask the uneven firing pattern. The crank was designed at 90 degrees intervals for a V8, so you imagine why.

Beyond the basics - tuneup and keeping the oil clean (and use a flush periodically to prevent the cam galleries from clogging up), I wouldn't try to spiff this one up. Run it until it dies (or when someone wants to buy the engine off ya!), then do an engine conversion. A turbo-4 is easier in the sense that everything bolts right on, though you will still be converting a lot. If you don't mind doing some custom work, go with the 5.0.

No flush, I say.

Not to be combative or disrespectful, but I have seen flush use result in the exact condition that you are stating it prevents.

Point taken. Kinda puts the owner damned either way, though, as left alone, the galleries could become clogged themselves. Flushed, other dirt may end up in the galleries instead of the oil filter, which puts one back in the same bad position.

By 262C, I'm assuming it's a Bertone Coupe??? What year is it? Any more info on the car?

Anyways, you would probably be better off dropping a turbo B23FT or B230FT than messing with the V6... They are not known to be good engines and parts are tough to come by. Also, performance parts basically don't exist... And even in top condition, the V6 won't be as powerful as a turbo/intercooled motor.

If it were my car and I had the money, I'd pull the V6 and replace it with a turbo intercooled B23FT/B230FT with a 3" exhaust and a modded airbox. Right there, you're at around 180HP/200lb-ft. If you want even more, you can get a bigger turbo, bigger intercooler, Ford T5 tranny, mist systems, oil squirters, etc etc.

Or you could drop in a 16-valve version of the B230 engine (B234F) for even more power. Oh yeah, and I don't know about the V6 tranny...I'm pretty sure they are compatable with the B23/0 engines. Should be the same anyway according to what I've read.

It is a 1979 Bertone. It is a one owner, found it at an auction. I have never owned a Volvo before. I've always messed with VW's.
Thanks for the info.
