Installed B21FT. Stuck...... 200 1984

I wrote about 2 months ago asking for advice on rebuilding a b21ft engine and got some sound advice to just drop a used engine in instead because of Volvo reliability. I did that, getting a good looking 85 from a salvage yard with 85k miles on it. It was easy taking it out because I had 3 guys helping me, but parts flew everywhere when they did. Well, now I'm doing this alone and putting together one big puzzle. I've got almost everything together but there are small things that are kicking my ass.

Of the alternator that I have, it has the regulator attached to the housing and one spade connector with one bolt connector in the back. Well, the line coming from my pigtail has red, green and black connectors in addition to the round end red power connector. I took the pigtail for the 85 and put it on the 84 so now how do I adapt this? Everything else is a good match.

The belts! I've got 4 or 5 belts, some smooth on the inner side and some grooved. I have no idea which belt is the alternator belt, which is the power steering pump belt, the a/c compressor belt or the shaft belt. Anyone?

I have a Haynes manual with NO EXPLODED VIEWS FOR THE VACUUM SYSTEM. WTF? Does anyone know where I can get some images that will enlighten me on the vacuum?

On wiring....I have a three prong connector that I have no clue where it goes to and it looks like the 2 other 2 prong connectors where one is for fuel injection and the other sit under the intake. In addition, I have some spade connectors coming out of the engine on both sides.

All of the plumbing is done, with the radiator and turbo cooler and oil cooler in place and all pumps and everything else I can think of in place. I have new oil pressure sensers and a new pilot bearing and new rear oil seal and new timing belt and more new parts. All I need to do is get these nit picky small things. Anyone?

Charlane

Have you gotten any further? Has anybody called you yet?
It sounds like you have made some progress: What do you have left to do?
Maybe do a repost to generate some more help.

Give us the numbers on the belts and we can probably sort them out. Also dimensions -- like the two alternator belts will me marked 9.5x925 (1984) or 9.5x918 or 920 (1985 up). PS and AC also change betwee '84 and '85.

On alternator, the smaller red wire goes to small D+ post (insulated from frame like Big Red B+ post). Plain D+ post takes a ring terminal, but may be (or have been) fitted with flat push-on terminal adapter (see coil primary terminals).

The black and green wires go to oil pressure sender. Should be different size female spade ends, so they will only go on one way.

I figured out the belts. That's all good. The vacuum system is my focus now. It's that and I have one 3 (I guess you could call it a) prong connector and it looks like 2 (maybe 3 other) prong connectors that go to the fuel injection manifold topside and the other one under the manifold. If you have some free time on your cell and feel like passing out a few words of wisdom, please call 210-875-8677.

Thanks,
Charlane

Got it! I found where the green wire goes next to the oil filter. Now I have to find out where the black wire goes. The alternator is now hooked up and that's one more step.

Thanks,
Charlane

I'll stick with what I said Friday...

"The black and green wires go to oil pressure sender. Should be different size female spade ends, so they will only go on one way."

The OP sender has two terminals -- green wire on one, black on the other.

Hi. Would you happen to have a diagram for the engine management/jetronic (Turbo) system? I have a Turbo B21FT from 1985 and the chassis is the same engine only from 1984 so there are wiring differences and the dealership had their book walk off! If you have this or even some 1984 data, I would appreciate it.

Thanks!
Charlane

Yahoo! Yes, I do want to talk to you! I need to know what to trace the vacuum lines coming from the top of the intake manifold go to and one other line coming from under the fuel injection next to the fuel line on top of the same manifold. If you could, my email address is greentek@aol.com.

Thank you! I was going to pull 240 Turbos over at random tonight and hit them up to look under their hood and no telling what kind of reaction I would have gotten from that.

Can't you just use the alternator that was in your car? Then the wires should go right on.
Also why not spend the money on new belts as this would be a good time to put on new ones. Get them online or from NAPA, or if you are really tight on cash get them from Autozone. Just make sure that you label each one when you get it: then you will know which is which!
Are you sure there is no diagram anywhere in the manual? Sometimes it is hidden in the emissions section or something. If I was you I would spend the $30.00 on the bently manual from fcpgroton.com or order it from your local bookstore.

The belts I had on prior to throwing a piston thru the wall on the removed engine were new and with all of the nickel and diming my way, I can use them. I already figured out a solution on that and will call the dealership to cross-reference with the numbers printed on the belts.

I'm going there! I went to St. George ltd, which is supposed to have all manner of manuals, but I will try yours. Thanks.

No problem... Wish I could be of more help.
I admire your courage for tackling the project. It can be hard when you have that many people helping you pull something like that out as it usually goes to fast to log every detail in your brain..
A good thing to do in the future is just leave all of the wires connected to everything on the engine and cut them off from the donor car. That way when you get it home you can usually just match the wire colors and or fittings and then you will be set!
I have yet to buy a Bently's manual myself. I keep wanting to but then I keep having to spend the money on parts just to keep my car running.
Is that St. George, Utah?
Sometimes you can cross referance things from a good website like fcpgroton or even napaonline. Good sites list the part numbers and a description which can then make it easier for you to distinguish between similiar parts.
Hope you get it running right soon!

Hi. The name of the company is St. George Limited and I should say that it was limited where Volvo was concerned but then.....so was the dealership! I went to fcpgroton and sent them some email with my fingers crossed. I also visited alldatadiy.com. Do you know anything about this? I should be a bloody expert by the time this ends. I have to move onto my Porsche (running but camshaft has a flat lobe and the water pump is on it's last leg), Mercedes (just for the body as someone smacked it while it was parked) and then my dad's old '70 Impala for which I need to find a replacement carburetor and distributor.

Yep. After that it's onto my home electrical design. I'm going full solar.

Shit.
