Have any of you simply done away with your second muffler? Mine is rusted out so I had to eviscerate it to prevent the guts from sailing out on the highway. The car is kinda loud, but I was thinkin of just forming a pipe to follow th flow of where the old muffler used to be. Any thoughts?.....as a side note I had a mitsu eclipse pull up next to me and rev up yesterday....from the sound of it I guess his muffler was broken too...

The rear muffler on my 84 245 went belly up, so I used a straight pipe from the front muffler to just past the rear bumper. I got a chrome extension 'cuz my pipe wasn't long enough and it angles down a bit. Not very loud at all.
An EVO?? Make sure you keep good walking shoes in the car.....

yeah yeah...but 2 things are driving me to the jappy rocket...first i have never owned a car with few than 250,000 miles on it...and i comute in D.C. traffic so the old bricks really don't have the punch i need off the line to keep the 16 year old girl in the hummer H2 next to me from boxing me out of a turn and thereby increaseing my cummute distance by 3 blocks or 45 min...Plus my line of work does not permit me to do much in the way of auto repair durning the week....and being late to work is not an option....soooo untill i can afford a new M3 or Zo6....i guess the evo will do....i wouldn't mind a german spec nissan silvia if i could get one for a reasonable price...but i have yet to find that.

If you're going to get a rice-rocket, get a Subaru, not a Mitsubitchy. Mitsu's quality, as well as its future in the US market is open to doubt. Subarus, on the other hand, are great cars - my sister has 100k trouble-free (except for a damaged spark plug wire) miles on a 1997 Legacy Outback so far. Manual Subarus are also 50/50 AWD, whereas Mitsus have a transverse engine and are front-biased (just like the "AWD" Volvos). Not to mention the great cargo capacity of Subie wagons and the fact that they are available with manual trannies, unlike Mitsu wagons (only sedans are manual, IIRC).

As for acceleration, I've driven my Brick (240 wagon) in both NJ and DC traffic, and I've hever had a problem with getting "boxed in" or with entrance ramps to expressways. Then again, my car's a manual and I can keep the engine screaming at 5k rpm if I need to.

I had the same problem, so I just tossed my second muffler. I did not have any problems with the Man, but I was going to college in a hick town in Missouri, so my Volvo sans muffler was nothing compared to the IROC sans doors and a hood.

So no problems with the Man and the car sounded awesome. But after a couple months I put a new muffler back on. Why? Because I kept getting headaches when I was on the highway. I had a straight pipe from the first muffler to the bumper, but the sound was still overwelming at 70mph. Just 10 minutes on the highway would leave me nearly deaf with a spinning head.

Just my 2 cents.

the brick is really not that loud as it is now...and with a 8inch x 4 inch hole in the muffler and a clomplete lack of internals i doubt that it will get much louder with the straight pipe.....actually i think the in car sound level will drop....plus i am on a mission to spend as little money as possible on this brick while still keeping it relaible and road worthy for another 30,000 miles. At which point it may be time for....yes i am sorry...and slightly battered Evo... Also I think my noise tollerance is a bit higher than others as I still have my first car...a 400hp 1968 firebird 400 (thats 6.6 liters of v8 to the euro boys) and it is waaayyyy louder than any volvo that I have come across... I just hate being mistaken for someone who believes a $400 titanium muffler on an import econo box makes it fast...Maybe I should put some japanesee letters on the old brick...just for coolness' sake...long live the busted ass IROC and the ultra cool guys that roll in em'.....do you have any idea how long it takes to grow a mullet?....now that's dedication...

That will work, although it will be a little loud. I once (way back in the early 70's) ran a straight pipe all the way back on a 61 model 122S. The car was actually pretty quiet if you were inside, although it was really loud if you were following behind. It sounded pretty good when it was backing off. It would probably be illegal now. Just thinking about it puts me in the mood...
