Diesel vacuum pump repair 200 1984

To any of you diesel owners out there. Where can I get a repair kit for the vacuum pump. FCPGroton doesn't have it.

What does the vacuum pump run - power brakes, HVAC, and cruise? Could you scrap the original item and replace it with an electric pump connected to a reservior? It might be cheaper/more reliable if you can't easily get parts for the VW/Volvo pump.

It has been years since I had to do it but you might want to check with VW and keep in mind the parts interchangeability between the diesel pump and the old vac pumps that the early B21 and B27's use. I have actually scavanged the valves out of an old B27 pump and used them in a diesel pump before.

might have a better price than the dealer, or check ebay for a rebuild kit for a VW diesel

Diesel vacuum pump repair 200 1984

Hey,
Are you running your 740 on grease? I am. I have about 1000 grease miles on so far and few problems (it has been a little hard to start sometimes and so I am concerned about the winter). How has it gone for you?

Jim

Congrats on your conversion.
I have over 20K grease miles on mine(4 years), and it seems to run a litle better than diesel. I have to burn diesel for about 2 highway miles before shutting down, although fresh injectors would likely reduce that distance. I thing injector condition has a lot to do with cold oil starting charachteristics. I also only burn non hydrogenated oil, so it stays pretty thin.
I have a dual tank system with 12ish gallons in a heated aluminum boat tank in the tire well. I hardly drive my hotrod anymore ; (

Greasecar 200 1984

Hi
Your post was very encouraging. I have been a little concerned about doing damage to the engine, but it has been running so well. I bought the conversion kit from Greasecar - two tank system with a fifteen gallon oil tank. Yesterday after purging for half a minute before shutdown, I ran a few errands in town on diesel - about ten minutes of driving - and the thing started instantaneously this morning. I guess I haven't been getting enough of the oil out of the system to insure a good cold start. I have been putting a little fuel treatment in both tanks to try to keep the injectors clean. By starting up and shutting down on diesel and using oil for all of my highway miles I figure I am getting about 70 miles per gallon of diesel. I have been using pure canola oil in the car. I own a restaurant and that is what I use in the deep fryers. I have been filtering it hot out of the fryer through two commercial fat filters and then pouring it into the tank. How long do you think I can expect to go between onboard fuel filter changes? It has been great not having to throw away or arrange for pickup of the used oil. I spent a lot of time hauling that stuff to the landfill recycling center and leaving it near the used motor oil. I hope the local paper will pick up the story and give me some free press.
