Trip reset 200 1991

I hit the trip reset this morning at the gas station and it did not reset and did not pop back out. I pulled it softly and the button came off. The odometer and trip meter work still, but I can't reset them.

Any thoughts?

Beware the red+white wire! 200 1991

The red and white striped wire behind the instrument cluster
will cause severe damage if you hook it up to anything other than a tach.
DAMHIK

Unless you have a tach, tie it up and put a "Tach Only" tag on it.

I fixed 2 of these already.
My local Volvo dealer sells the part for about $3.

Word to the wise -
The button presses against a flat-blade spring with folds and bends in it.
You can see that the L-shaped "button" takes a lot of stress pushing on the spring. No wonder they break, especially if pushed while driving and you hit a bump.

On mine, I unbent the spring a bit to provide less stress on the plastic when it gets pressed. I used needle-nose pliers. Test after reassembling the cluster, before putting it back in the dash. Tension should be gently, not hard. Maybe the new "button" will last longer that way. So far, my 2 repairs have held and not broken again.

Don't fix the button.
Resetting the odometer is a good way to damage the odometer drive gear...then your odometer won't work. Leave the reset button out. It's no big deal as long as the odometer and speedometer still work.

What about the load to the gear added when the ignored service reminder mileage worm drive binds up at the end of its travel?

I had this happen on my '99 240. The reset button or shaft had broken off partway down. I had an old instrument cluster from a pick and pull which had a good reset button. I replaced the broken one with that. Still working.

You have to remove the instrument cluster and partially disassemle the cluster to get to the odometer. Once you do, it will be clear how to replace the button.

I don't know if you can buy these buttons or not. If you can't get one, try a salvaged instrument cluster as I did. Be sure to check the button before you buy though. Good luck!

When I replaced my odo gear, I fixed my broken reset button by drilling out the broken plastic to create a recess for the remaining small-diameter shaft, then assembled and reinforced the affair with JB Weld. I doubt it will break again.

Henceforth, reset your odo only when the car is stationary, and use a deliberate push rather than a 'jab'.

I'm sorry but that information is classified and can only be shown on a "need to know " basis. It's really a super car; 250 hp, corners like a sports car, seats 14, and gets 35 mpg!

Buy a new reset button and install it.
