kleen wheels: good or bad? 200

Has anyone used "Kleen" wheels brand brake dust shields? If so, would you recommend them?

I don't know what Kleen Wheels look like, but I'll tell you what I have heard.

25 years ago I did some work on Porsches.

In those days, someone was selling black anodized aluminum bell-shaped shields that fit between the wheels and hubs to keep the brake dust off the wheels.

I was told that if these shields were installed, Porsche would void the warrantee on any component related to the brakes or hubs (e.g. rotors, bearings, etc.)

On my '91, I put "dust free" pads on the front. I forget the brand. They are not actually dust free, they are just really light grey in color, so you don't notice the dust on the wheels. I don't like the way they perform, especially when they get hot, but I really like having my wheels look clean all the time. I guess there are always trade-offs.

As Dave mentioned, there are issues with brake cooling that can lead to premature brake rotor warpage. Skip it.

There has been some concern voiced about brake cooling being adversly impacted. I'm not sure if normal daily driving works the brakes hard enough to worry about that. Other than that I can't think of anything it could hurt.

Otherwise the residue can be cleaned off with methylated spirit - it may be called methyl alcohol in the USA - it dissolves the sticky black tarry stuff and comes up like new with a bit of rubbing (with a cloth).
