Experience with Amazon Running on LPG 120-130

Does anyone out there have experience with an LPG conversion on an Amazon? The conversion here in Germany itself will cost about $600 plus labor. At over $6.00 per gallon for super it is starting look interesting.

Thanks for your advice.

Like Joaquin (yogui the bear apparently :) ) said, I posted some info before. See his links. I live in the Netherlands, where -I presume- about 80% of all amazons run LPG. What is it that you want to know?

cheers, ben.

Thanks Ben, Yogui, & Steve,

I was most interested in any comments in performance, problems, & comments in general about what to expect with an Amazon running on LPG.

Experience with Amazon Running on LPG 120-130

I can´t account about lpg on amazons (just I´m on the process to convert my 121 to lpg - just hardened the valve seats now), but, when i live on Japan (postgraduate studies) on 84-86 I owned a Toyota Crown.

This car was originally made for taxi use, and due it, run on a butane/propane mix (like lpg). The car was 10 years old (very cheap) and was hard and resistant like the amazon (at least in comparision to other rice cookers).

Initially japanesse condisciples tolerate the old mob due I was a gaijin (alien), but after some time, they like it (big, easy to drive, long maintenance periods, never abandon me in middle of the street, kind of a limusine due the big internal space).

The big gas tank take half of the storage bay, but I goes to gas station only one time a week. No so fast as a Corvette, but in highway it surpass easily any sedan or station wagon from toyota, nissan, mitsubishi, etc and run head to head with a Mercedes Benz. In comparision with the japanesse cars of my friends, no difference on driving or power - and my car monthly costs was a third in comparision to theys!.

I´m convinced LPG is a solution for our Amazons, you have economy and at same time you beat the emission controls (a secondary bonus), also, the old engine are subject to less strain (by example, the oil remain clear up to six times more than with gasoline).

Some information about economy and advantages/disvantages of LPG can be read on http://www.wps.com/LPG/

Performance generally drops a bit (perhaps 10% ?) due to the lower energetic value of LPG. However, since LPG already enters the intake system as a gas, rather then a liquid, the mixture is much more equal and causes a very clean and good burn. Therefore, in practice I hardly notice a performance difference between the 2 fuels.

No specific problems involved when running LPG. You do need to place a big chunky tank in the car which leaves you with less storage space. Also, hardened valves seats are needed. LPG burnes at a higher temp then pertol, so with hardened seats, the valves will recess even faster.

General comments: very pleased wit it, as are basically all LPG-amazon drivers over here. Its a very simple system, realy easy to adjust (one idle, and one micture screw) and basically no need for maintainance. I'd say go for it.

Hope this helps :)

cheers, ben

Hi. Some time ago knutselsmurf help me publishing some images about LPG in Amazons on the gallery section of the brickboard:

Probably you can contact knutselsmurf for additional info on his web site: http://www.tinustechniek.tk/

Will the car be dedicated propane or duel fuel?
If it's dedicated to propane start looking for very high compression pistions and begin enjoying the increased power and economy, plus there is something great about high compression "normal" use engines that is hard to describe. I used to drive around in an old flatbed truck (5 ton) with a 283 chevy that was stock other than 13:1 compression and running on propane. The thing ran GREAT it was not fast at all but it ran GREAT, eager "happy" to be running - like my old 128 SL Fiat - slow but eager.
