Auto Trans- no 1st or 2nd 200

I have 83 240 DL with automatic transmission and cannot move the shift lever into 1st or 2nd. Lever moves into all other positions fine(P,R,N,D). Is this some type of linkage problem or could the transmission have a problem? This does not seem to affect driveability at all.

Is there anything I could check?

Thanks

Bushings? 200

One of the commonest linkage problems in older 240's is the bushings on the linkage. These wear away and prevent the linkage from lining up and moving smoothly. It's ironic that they're so cheap, and such a nuisance to replace (you have to get under the car).
I'd say the odds are in favor of this being the problem, rather than something inside the transmission.
Good luck.

Auto Trans- no 1st or 2nd 200

Yes, I did try pressing down on button on top. Also, I got under the vehicle and couldn't see anything obviously wrong with the linkage between the shift and the transmission. Is the locking mechanism internal to the shifter?

Thanks

Did you press down on large button on top of shift lever before trying to move lever into 2 and 1?

If you did, and lever still won't go to 2/1, then there's likely something wrong with the linkage - or at least with the locking/unlocking mechanism.
