An aquaintance ran out of gas. Now he can't get his 240 started. Is there something you have to do when you starve fuel injection or could this be a fuel pump issue?

Thanks all for the great advice as usual. I'll pass it on along with an invite to the BB.

This happens when the line feeding the main pump has air, and the couple of gallons that are delivered to the roadside distress are not enough to move that air along.

Like Dan says, if you fill the tank (15.8 Gal) the gravity pressure plus the in-tank pump should get it past the airlock, but if the tank pump or hose is less than ideal, and the tank is still pretty empty, you're best to crack a line fitting up front ahead of the regulator to purge the air.

Sometimes it helps to crack open the connector on the fuel rail and allow the air to escape while cranking (or better yet jumpering fuses to run the pumps) Whatever fuses in that car are for the intank pump and the mainpump. Fuelpumps do a very bad job of pumping air. Keep an eye on the loosened fitting and tighten it up as soon as fuel is visible at the fitting while running the pumps. Keep a rag under the fitting to soak up any fuel you may spill and remove the rag before running the car.

It should self prime once the tank is full, check the in-tank pump it may not be working. If it is working the main pump may have burned up due to lack of lubrication (fuel). Dan

In addition to checking the fuel pumps, check the fuel filter . Sometimes trash is drawn into the lines and clog the filter after running the tank empty.
