Steering wheel spline interchangeability question 140-160

Hi Guys,
I will likely be buying a '73 142 soon, and I was wondering if anyone can tell me if the steering wheel spline setup is the same on this 142 as it is on the 240 series. I have a beautiful wheel to go on this car, but the hub is from a 240. If I recall, the 240 is tapered so a steering wheel puller is not required. If anyone can shed some light on this, I'd appreciate it. Also, did the 73 still have D-Jet? If so, how are the computers holding up with age? Thanks!!

Steering wheel spline interchangeability question 140-160

I put a 79 242GT wheel (smaller diameter)on my 72 142E and have no problems with fit. The ergonomics with this set up are excellent!!
Also, non-related but if you need a set of shocks go to ebay parts under 140 volvos and check out the Gabriel shocks. Bought a set a year ago, they are holding up extremely well. These are gas units that put the buckboard ride of KYB shocks to shame--plus they are great handling and they are only 12.95 for fronts and same for rears. Mine is lowered with IPD springs and bars.

Steering wheel spline interchangeability question 140-160

Yes, they are interchangeable (at least with early-ish 240s)

I have used a 244GL wheel in my '74 142 (and it also fits a '72 142) and also a '74 164E wheel which is in it currently.

One issue though - in both cases the padded rear part of the steering wheel (if that makes sense ?) fouls the plastic steering column shroud on the 140, so the shroud needs to be trimmed (or just left off completely !) to allow the wheel to fit. Not a major drama though - just take the Dremel to it...

I had the same issue with a MotoLita wheel which fitted a '72 perfectly but fouled the shroud on the '74.

The wheels have the same spline, but the shapelength of the back of the wheel is larger diameter so it wont fit into the standard shroud. I think the shoud must stick out further on the later model 140's compared to the earlier ones.

Hope this helps !

Dave

Haven't checked the steering wheel but the 73 140s had D-jet and it was also
used up to 1975 on the 164. Computers are OK if you keep the water out of them.
MAP sensors get cracks in the diaphragm and the wiring gets cracks in the
insulation. Having said that, out of a lot of 4 computers and 7 MAPSensors
that I tested several months ago I had one 'puter and one MAPSensor bad and
the rest are serviceable. On the computer, check the contacts in the cable
connector and make sure all the pinchers pinch the board edge tightly!
