Replacing a Fender: What to use to replace the seal? 200 1980

I saw a thread on this not too long ago and thought I had saved it, but apparently I hadn't.

So I'll pose the question again.

I'm replacing the fender on my '80 245 DL this weekend, and I'm not sure what I should use to replace the sealer gunk that goes on the back side.

Any suggestions?

Thanks as always.

I've had my guards (fenders to americans) off a couple of times and one of them I got from the junkyard. I seem to remember them still being a bit gooey when they went back on. So far nothing has rusted out, rattled around or fallen off, and i haven't been ticketed by the cops for not having fresh seam sealer. It's hardly a head gasket.

If you are talking about the seam sealing putty try the following:

3M Strip-Calk P/N 051135-08578 (Black)

You get 60 one foot long strips per box which you can knead and form to any shape or thickness you what and is non hardening.

If you are talking about the undercoating then any good auto parts store should have rubberized spray on undercoating.

Auto parts stores sell a spray rubberized sealer that works well. The best is from 3M. Cost is minimal and one can will do two fenders.

I have to do the job several times. There is usually enough "gunk" on the new/old fender to do the job. I have never used any at all when replacing the fender. If you are concerned you can use black roofing sealer. I works great, stays pliable, and will outlast the car.

I've had good success with black silicon RTV. You want something there as a vibration / moisture damper, and since silicon is so prevalent in everything from wax to makeup. If you're repainting, you'll want to do a thurough strip just the same of any silicon compounds.
