heater control valve substitutes and other questions 120-130

Hi all.
I am in need of a heater control valve for my '62 122. It seems in the past I read a thread offering advise on using valves out of other vehicles (at a much lower cost) but now I cannot find this thread. I remember someone saying that the valve out of some Toyota works/fits well.

I'm also in need of a temperature sensor and an oil pressure sensor. Can I just buy generic sensors off the shelf of my local parts store? I know that some oil sensors have the pressure complete a circuit and some have the pressure open the circuit. If I knew which I needed, I think any sensor would work.

The crane ignitions listed in the ipd catalog come for very specific Bosch distributors (many diffent model numbers). Someone on e-bay is selling a crane electonic ignition (new) that is advertised as being for all 4 cylinder Volvos of the era. How can this be or can't it?

Any advise is much appreciated.

Also... Did early 122's come with hand pump windshield washers? I just found a part in my '62 that seems to be a hand pump.

thanks, mike

I've seen nice totally self contained heater valves on mid 80s
volkswagens. I'm planning on using one on my 145 when I get that
far on the project. I find that I don't really use the automatic
adjustment feature found on the 140 / 240 style valves; it is on
or off and the rest is adjusted with fan speed or which vents it
exhausts out of (ie if I'm too warm with the fan off, I'll switch
to defrost, and if that's still too warm I'll either turn the heat
off or I'll open a window a crack.)

The VW valve is just a cable to a gate valve sort of setup.

There are generic, plastic in-line control valves that I've seen on various old Volvos, you'll have to lengthen the cable to reach the engine bay or some-such, your results may vary. Volkswagen Rabbit comes to mind.
240 control valves are no longer available so Volvo offers some plastic in-line conversion for those cars, too.

Crane ignition kits fit most distributors. IPD is usually very helpful in this regard. Give 'em a call.

Shayne.

I'm not sure if you were asking me or Shayne. But, if you're asking me, I'll be there. I live in Lawrence which is only 50 miles from K.C.

I bought a "61 122S back in 1961 that had the douche bag type windshield washer reservoir, and, now that you mention it, I believe that the pump was manually operated; but how is another question. That was a long time and many cars ago.

I have a 240 heater valve in ours. One hose had to be routed differently, and I think I had to bend the end of the control cable a bit, but it was all simple to do.

Most heater valves of that era were completely generic internally, the main difference being the orientation of the hose connecting pipes. NAPA sells a repair kit that fixes the internals for $6-$7. It doesn't work every time, but it might be worth a try at that price...

If a '62 is like the later cars, the oil pressure switch is generic, but the temp sender is not -- it's actually part of the gauge, and would have to be repaired along with the gauge as a unit. The gauge does come out of the instrument cluster fairly easily without removing the cluster from the dash.

I just installed a Crane in an early B18 distributor for a customer this afternoon. It does fit. I don't have the part number of the kit, unfortunately -- the customer bought it himself from the Summit Racing catalog.

Don't know anything about a pump for the squirters one way or the other, sorry.
