heater control valve substitutes and other questions 120-130

I've seen nice totally self contained heater valves on mid 80s
volkswagens. I'm planning on using one on my 145 when I get that
far on the project. I find that I don't really use the automatic
adjustment feature found on the 140 / 240 style valves; it is on
or off and the rest is adjusted with fan speed or which vents it
exhausts out of (ie if I'm too warm with the fan off, I'll switch
to defrost, and if that's still too warm I'll either turn the heat
off or I'll open a window a crack.)

The VW valve is just a cable to a gate valve sort of setup.
