Ignition timing woes after T-belt 700 1987

Car is a 1987 740 with B230F engine. During timing belt change crank pully was severely disturbed (I know, I know). Lined all the pulleys up, installed the timing belt, buttoned her all back up and the engine ran rough for 30 seconds to 1 minute then died. Rechecked timing marks on crank pulley and camshaft- they were spot on. Checked ignition timing and it was way off. I advanced it as far as the distributor will turn which was not far enough. It runs pretty smooth now but it is still ~30 degrees btdc. I assume I need to play with timing belt adjustments but how exactly? Thanks for any help.
