tail and brake lights both out - what should I check first? 200 1988

It's an '88 wagon, new to me. The previous owner said that they quit working after 'best buy' installed the stereo. He tried different bulbs and the fuses look fine. The rear fog lights do work (top red ones) but the tail and brake lights do not. I haven't gotten into it yet and would like some time saving pointer's if anybody has any.
