New purchase... advice on diagnostics 200 1978

I'm soon to be taking delivery of a 'new' '78 245 for nearly free, but it has a couple issues. The one that most concerns me is this:

'Seller' says that it cuts out at about half tank. Typical for having the rubber line in the tank pickup line broken, but he said he replaced that recently. I had a similar problem in my '80 only to find the line was fine, and a new main fuel pump fixed it.

Second problem.. he said the car sometimes dies after about 45 minutes on hot days. He is convinced it is the catalytic converter overheating and not letting exhaust though. Claims that coolling the cat with water gets it going in less time. Does that sound feasable? Seems to me that the cat would overheat much faster than that. I'm wondering if its not the main fuel pump overheating and stopping, and it coincidentally cools in about the time it takes him to cool the catalytic converter.. but he says the main fuel pump sounds fine.

Any thoughts? I'll be retrieving the car from about an hour from home and don't want to get stranded... if even for just a half hour or so...

Thanks,
