loose ball joint lock nut 700 1990

My daughter was away at college. When she came home this weekend she complained that the Volvo had a strange 'pop' in the front end. I drove it and it was really bad.
I lifted the car, took off the wheel and found the ball joint lock nut had worked loose down to the cotter pin. I was able to tighten it (also used lock tite).
Question:
Do you think there was enough damage to replace the ball joint? (I just did that last winter. Dont know why it worked loose.)
