Came down here to retrieve my Dad's '86 240 and drive it back to Huntsville Alabama. Car stayed dry during hurricane and cranked right up...however,
when the A/C is OFF, the front clutch pully (the one with that has the belt on the crankshaft) rattles and makes intermittent rattling noise. When I turn the A/C ON, the clutch pulls in and the rattling seems to stop.
I've got to drive about 500 miles. I have heard stories about the compressor pulley freezing up, popping the belt, and presto..no power steering.
Can I drive on interstate with car like this? Should I take the belt off of the compressor (and do without power steering) before I depart?
If the rattling sound goes away when the air conditioning is ON, should I drive it that way all the way home? The compressor is a replacement...about one year old...it was the kiwi or something.
I need some advice...cuz I'm stuck in New Orleans (River Ridge) and I need to know before I leave for home.
