weird idle 700 1987

okay over the last two days my wagon's gone wack! warm or cold when I come to a stop and idle the engine will sometimes rev up to 1500 rpm or so and sometimes the idle will drop to 500 or even stall and now on acceleration she runs rough, like momentary lapses in engine speed but I don't notice the tach dropping.
Anyone have any ideas? I'd appreciate the help.
