reverse lights don't work 200 1986

I have an 86 245 dl. I've owned it for a year and in that time the reverse lights have never worked. I've tested the lamps and fuse (which all work fine). The car recieved a new clutch before I bought it and I am wondering if there is a relay or something that should be attached to the transmission? Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks.
