Check the wires located on the transmission on the top of the passenger side. Make sure they are securely fastened. the wiring harness may need to be rebuilt if the wires look decayed. I had to rebuild the transmission wiring harness on my '87 744GLE with 4sd w/od.

If the harness is shot. Be prepared to remove the drivers seat and carpet to access the harness and plugs.
