ABS Light on all the time 700 1989

A question for all you brick experts. A 1989 740 16 valve, with about 72K miles (117K Kms). When the car is started everything is ok, but shortly after driving the ABS comes on and stays on. The brakes work fine except there is no ABS action when braking hard enough to lock the wheels. If reset the ABS sytem (pulling the fuses turn on the ignition and re-insert the fuses the light goes off for 2 to 5 mins while driving and then comes on again. I don't know if this is a symptom of a simple or a serious problem. If anyone has any ideas as to what it might/could be I would appreciate your suggestions.
