Heater Core Question 900

I replaced my heater core last spring with the four seasons model. Everything seemed fine until now. Obviously the cooler weather is upon us here in New England and I find that when I turn the heater all the way up I get a distinct antifreeze smell. I did not get that smell last spring when it was still cool.

Here's the problem - the antifreeze level has not changed and there is absolutely no antifreeze at the floor outlets on either side. When I replaced it in the spring there was antifreeze at the floor outlets.

I have checked the inlet and outlet hoses where they enter the firewall and it is dry.

Anyone have an experience like this? Is it possible for a heater core to go bad in 6 months? I saw a post here recently that said their aftermarket core smelled but did not leak. This doesn't sound right to me, but I haven't had much experience with heater cores.

Appreciate the help,
Ian
