Temperature gauge redlined 200 1990

I started up this morning, and the temp guage instantly redlined. (it was in the 50's, I could put my hand on the block, so I know it wasnt a true reading). I started and turned off the engine several times, after the 4th time, the gauge read normal. I drove 45 mintues to work and the gauge read normal.

Im thinking its either the sensor or temperature compensator board? Im thinking order both, and change the board first? If its still intermitant, then change the sensor.

Ive never changed a sensor, should you drain the coolant before changing? Are there any trick to getting a good seal after changing?

Is there anything else I should look at?

I had changed the thermostat about a month ago, and its run fine since then, just coincidence? or could it be an air bubble?
